Free for Members: Research and Ethics of the Targeted Insertion of Genes into the Human Genome

Live Wednesday, Dec. 7 - December 01, 2022

Attend the expert-led session on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1–3 p.m. CT, for free if you're a member. Watch on demand anytime if you're an ASGCT member or registrant.

Gene editing approaches are finally making their way to the clinic after scientists have spent decades researching their safety and efficacy. So far, treatments are being investigated for sickle cell disease, inherited eye disorders, and more in preclinical and clinical trials. However, many ethical and societal questions remain about this strategy that aims to be a one-time therapy. On Wednesday, Dec. 7, with the help of several experts, we’ll dive into some of these questions and consider how public perception of gene editing influences the direction of the whole field.

During this Insight Series session, Michael Holmes, PhD, will review some of the key questions and advances that enabled the first clinical testing of targeted genome integration by Sangamo Therapeutics. He’ll focus on Zinc Finger Nucleases (ZFNs), the primary platform he used while working at Sangamo.

Le Cong, PhD, will talk about some of the current high-impact research in gene editing. He’ll describe dCas9-based gene editing for cleavage-free genomic knock-in of long sequences. One of the focus areas of his lab is pursuing CRISPR and non-CRISPR gene editing and RNA modulating technologies using computational methods.

Next, Rachel Salzman, DVM, will take us into the ethical considerations of rewriting the genome. She’ll discuss how to incorporate patient perspectives through the research and development process.

Closing out the session will be Samira Kiani, MD, who will talk about how to engage with the public about genomic science. She’ll discuss her work in understanding how collective wisdom and the responsibilities of scientists should play out in the conversation.

Register for free if you're an ASGCT member ($50 for nonmembers). All members and registered attendees can watch the event on demand following its live airing. Once you're registered, prepare for the live event by watching pre-recorded talks from several of the speakers.
