Scientific Horizons and Ethical Limits of Gene and Cell Therapy

Engagement with ethical dimensions of biomedical research and innovation is essential for professionals working in gene and cell therapy. However, ethics is often reduced to checkboxes to the neglect of broader questions about relationships between science and society and what these mean for responsible research conducted to serve the public good.

This session will explore foundational cases in biomedical research (e.g., embryo culture, biobanking, translational research, CRISPR) that have shaped approaches to defining ethical limits and the forms of deliberation, participation, exclusion, and oversight they exemplify. The purpose of the session is to explore and invite collective discussion about the larger context, purpose, and necessity of sustained engagement with ethical dimensions of research undertaken by the ASGCT community.
