The virtual training course equips faculty in sub-Saharan Africa with the necessary knowledge and skills to educate students on advances in gene therapy.
ASGCT is honored to be selected as a 2023 ASAE Power of Associations Gold Award winner for its Global Gene Therapy Training course. This award from the American Society of Association Executives recognizes associations that have addressed global development, and, more specifically, those that have addressed critical societal needs internationally.
Global Gene Therapy Training is a free, virtual certificate-awarding course. The course equips faculty in sub-Saharan Africa with the necessary knowledge and skills to educate students on advances in gene therapy. It’s offered as part of the Society’s goal to provide global audiences with accurate and up-to-date information through educational and training programs that increase awareness and understanding of gene and cell therapy.
Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) collaborated with the Global Outreach Committee to select the course topics. The ASGCT committee developed the learning objectives, selected readings, delivered didactic presentations, and facilitated discussion between participants and instructors.
The four-week course is directed at full-time academic faculty teaching at accredited universities or medical schools in sub-Saharan Africa. It aims to train these faculty so they can implement gene therapy education into their university and medical school curricula. In 2022, 45 participants from nine countries were awarded a certificate after participating in the course. The course begins this week with 148 participants from 15 countries who will attend eight classes to earn a certificate. ASGCT is proud to partner with local universities to increase knowledge and understanding about gene therapy around the world.
Sam Kay is ASGCT's Global Outreach Manager.
