Margaret Hamburg, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in medicine and public health, will be one of the keynote speakers on November 6, the third and final day of the ASGCT Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. The program that day will focus on Ethical, Societal, and Policy Issues in Germline Gene Editing.

Hamburg is co-chair of the WHO advisory committee on governance and oversight of human genome editing, and she will provide an overview and update of the committee’s work during her talk. The advisory committee is addressing standards and practices for the responsible use of gene editing technology, as well as attributes of effective governance frameworks.

In addition to her position at WHO, Hamburg currently serves as both foreign secretary for the National Academy of Medicine and chair of the board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Hamburg previously served as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, where she was known for advancing regulatory science, medical product innovation, and the globalization of the agency. While at the FDA, Hamburg oversaw the implementation of groundbreaking laws to curb tobacco use and to enhance food safety.

Joining Hamburg as a keynote speaker on the same day of the Policy Summit will be Francis Collins, M.D., Ph.D., director of the National Institutes of Health, who will discuss the need for an international moratorium on the clinical use of germline gene editing. You can register online to be a part of this intimate audience, capped at 350 people, with Hamburg and Collins.
