Meet Juliana Alvarez-Argote, MD: ASGCT Volunteer Rockstar
August 02, 2023
In an August 2023 installment of our series highlighting ASGCT member volunteers, meet Juliana Alvarez-Argote, MD, chair of the Society's Education Committee.
ASGCT is a volunteer-led organization, and it could not effectively pursue its mission and strategic vision without the commitment of its volunteers. The Society does so through 32 standing, scientific, and board committees supported by more than 400 member volunteers. We recognize our committee leaders for their time, commitment, and expertise, and appreciate their willingness to help ASGCT advance the field of gene and cell therapy in a unique and meaningful way.
Juliana Alvarez-Argote, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Alvarez-Argote received her medical degree from the Universidad del Valle, in Cali, Colombia. She then graduated from Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Connecticut.
Afterward, Dr. Alvarez-Argote completed the Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking fellowship at the University of Chicago, IL, and next a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at MCW. Her professional interests include non-malignant hematology, sickle cell disease, and gene therapy, particularly lentiviral gene therapy.
Dr. Alvarez-Argote leads the Education Committee to develop programming for ASGCT events. The committee keeps a pulse on members’ current priorities and plans multiple education sessions at the Annual Meeting. These education sessions, such as the "Vector Derived Gene Therapy" session at the 2023 Annual Meeting, are tailored to earlier-career professionals and span scientific and commercialization topics at a higher level than general symposia. Dr. Alvarez-Argote and the Education Committee work to establish members’ expertise in a variety of areas to support the growing field of CGT.
ASGCT thanks Dr. Alvarez-Argote for her service on ASGCT’s Education Committee. Our members serve as subject matter experts for Society-led projects, including Annual Meeting programming, through both our standing committees and scientific committees, and we could not do the work we do without them.
